Home Schooling
DC Code § 38-202 states that the only requirements which presently apply to home schools are that each teacher who gives private instruction, shall, in accordance with the rules adopted by the Board, pursuant to subchapter I of chapter 15 of title 1, report to the Board the name, address, sex and date of birth of each minor who resides permanently or temporarily in the District, who transfers between schools, or who enrolls in or withdraws from his or her school. A parent who elects home instruction in lieu of school attendance must notify the superintendent annually each August of intent to do so for the coming school year.
The Office of the State Superintendent of Education reminds all parents and/or legal guardians wishing to home school their children that they must submit an Intent to Home School form annually for the coming school year by August 15. The form is currently available online and must be submitted at least 15 days before home instruction begins. Select the link below, print the form, and submit it to:

The District of Columbia has a statutory responsibility to assure that children between the ages of five and seventeen, residing in the District of Columbia, receive an education. The Office of the State Superintendent (OSSE) seeks to balance this mandate with a choice for parents and legal guardians to provide a thorough and regular education in a home schooling program. The OSSE’s intent is to ensure that children participating in a home schooling program receive an education that will enable them to function as productive members of society in the 21st century.

Financial Assistance
The Office of the State Superintendent of Education's (OSSE) Higher Education Financial Services (HEFS) administers all of the District of Columbia's state level higher education grant programs. Unlike most states, the DC Tuition Assistance Program (DCTAG) and the DC Adoption Scholarship is neither need nor merit based. The DC Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership (DCLEAP) and the DC Adult Scholarship programs are designed to support students who demonstrate need.

Newseum
DC Home Schools qualify for free admission to the Newseum.
To qualify, home schools must have a group reservation. Learn about field trips to the Newseum. The Newseum offers 50-minute, national standards-linked, educator-led class experiences in journalism; including the First Amendment and Headlines of History at no additional charge.
